Welcome Note

The International Festival of Byzantine Music which is meant to aid the cultural and musical restauration of the urban communities of Transylvania and to promote byzantine music, art and culture in the ecclesiastical and profane orthodox spaces.
This Festival represents Psaltic Group Kyrios’s Concept and it was organized by Christian-Cultural Association ORTODOXIA from Brasov and NEAMUNIT Association from Bucharest. The non- governmental Christian-Cultural Association ORTODOXIA has a non-profit and non-political status, thus it does not support any political parties.
Its main aims are both financial and logistical support for Radio ORTODOXIA based in Brasov and promoting Orthodox values, the development of both social and charitable mission of the Orthodox Church.
The first edition of the International Byzantine Music Festival- Transylvania Byzantine will take place in Brasov between 11th and 15th of September, 2019 under the patronage of the Mitropoly of Transylvania.
The initiative to give birth to this festival came from the urge to approach our cult and cultural needs, which thereafter, gave birth to some ambitious objectives such as:
-promoting a rich cultural heritage of religious music born in the Medieval Byzantium which in fact was the so named Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, its capital being Constantinople. An interesting and rather beautiful fact is the noticeable linguistic similarity between the name of our country and the official name of the Medieval Byzantium, namely Romania or Basilica Romanion which means The Roman Empire.
-reviving byzantine music in Transylvanian areas and its reunion with the omnipresent religious music from all the other historical regions of Romania, ‘’Tara Romaneasca’’ and ‘’Moldova’’, one of its most fundamental traits being that of universality which is strongly related to the spreading of Christianity whose essence is that of unity. ” (Gabriela Ocneanu ,The Place of Religious Music in University Music Studies L” in “Acta Musicae Byzantinae”, Centre of Byzantine Studies, Iasi, vol. I, 1999);
– offering a more consistent insight in the study and practice of religious music of byzantine origin in the orthodox communities of Transylvania.
-reviving the Orthodox cult and culture in Transylvania but also in urban areas of Brasov that have a rich history regarding the practice without interruption of the Psaltic chants. ( A year of high importance was 1945 when the First Romanian School was born and a reference worth mentioning for this historical moment is the study of Prof. Dr. Constantin Catrina from Transylvania University of Brasov “The School of Byzantine Music from Schei, Brasov”- Creation and Interpretation, where he mentions some valuable aspects which shaped the fate of Orthodoxy by putting Transylvania under Habsburg leadership for 300 years resulting tremendous effects on Orthodoxy at that time.
-Last but not least, we want to mention that our aim is to bring different forms of byzantine art and culture and to make this festival a door for welcoming many more such festivals in different areas of Transylvania.
